Launched on 31st October 1971 and retired in September 2003.
Taken into active Armed Forces service on 20th July 1972.
Of its class, only four ships are still in service.
This shipwreck is part of the Ocean Revival Project. The Ocean Revival Project was born with the intent of promoting Algarve's underwater tourism, making a one of a kind artificial reef constituted by 4 ships: "Corveta Oliveira e Carmo", "Fragata Hermenegildo Capelo", "Patrulha Zambeze" and "Navio Hidrográfico Almeida e Carvalho".
Unfortunately, after the storms of 2016, this ship was strongly "punished" by the tides and is heavily damaged. Nonetheless, it is still a very popular dive spot. Its marine life is very diverse and plentiful, from shoals of small fishes to shoals of larger fishes and also Nudibranches.
