Days 2 to 6

In this ultimate diving program from the Porto Santo Island, you will be treated to unparalleled adventures exploring the fantastic Porto Santo coastal dive spots. Even if there are many others you'll thrill to dive there are two of the most remarkable shipwrecks in the Atlantic Oceanthat for sure will attract your attention.

The Madeirense shipwreck, resting peacefully on the ocean floor, offers a glimpse into maritime history.
Divers can expect to encounter the haunting remnants of this once majestic vessel, now adorned with colorful coral growth and teeming with marine life.
Amidst the rusted hull, schools of fish dart playfully, while curious moray eels peek out from hidden crevices, creating a captivating underwater tableau.
The cargo ship "Madeirense" lies about a mile away from the coast and about 34mts below the surface, it sank in October 2000. The ship, which was part of Madeira's maritime transport system, awaits for you a few meters deep. It has become a real artificial reef where you can move in and out of the ship's cabins, surrounded by thousands of fish. Here we can find marine spiders crabs, anemones and all kinds of marine life.
There are also reefs off the coast nearby and even an archaeological dive site where you can see ancient cannons. It is a unique diving spot of great peace, where the sunshine filters in through the transparent and turquoise waters to highlight the dazzling underwater world that surrounds the beautiful island of Madeira.

Meanwhile, the Corveta Pereira D'Eça shipwreck presents a different kind of underwater spectacle. As divers descend into the depths, they are greeted by the imposing silhouette of this naval vessel, its structure a testament to the passage of time. Here, amidst the wreckage, divers may encounter larger marine species such as barracudas and groupers, weaving through the corridors of this underwater relic.
Corvette General Pereira d'Eça is one of the three ships that were sunk close to the Madeira Islands.
She lies less than 1 mile away from the coast in a declared marine reserve area at a depth of 30 meters.
Like other ships that today host fantastic dives, this vessel was sunk with the objective of creating an artificial reef to attract many different species and enthusiasts of wreck diving.
The NRP General Pereira d'Eça (tack number F477) was a corvette of the João Coutinho class. The ship was named after António Pereira de Eça.
In June 2013, the Regional Government of Madeira formalized an application with the Ministry of National Defense for the assignment of two vessels in the process of being decommissioned for use as an artificial reef, including the corvette General Pereira d'Eça and the Corvette Afonso Cerqueira. The latter is another fantastic dive spot you can check here in PortugalDive.com.
On 28 October 2014, it was announced that the corvette General Pereira d'Eça would be destined to serve as an artificial reef in the Autonomous Region of Madeira and was finally sunk in the bay of Porto Santo on 13 July 2016.

Both shipwrecks offer a unique and unforgettable diving experience, combining history with marine biodiversity. From intricate coral formations to majestic marine creatures, these dive spots on Porto Santo Island promise to leave divers in awe of the mysteries that lie beneath the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.

The General Pereira d'Eça, a prominent figure in Portuguese military history, served as a commander during the 19th century. Renowned for his valor and leadership, his legacy endured through the naming of the Corvette Pereira d'Eça, immortalizing his contributions to Portugal's naval heritage.

Right in the middle of the Atlantic, the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo are a haven of natural beauty. The exotic colours of the flowers stand out from among the blue sea and the emerald green vegetation; this is an archipelago where two thirds are a protected area and where the largest Laurisilva forest in the world is located.
